Bishop Stephen Nyodho Ador Majwak is a Sudan Relief Fund partner and Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Malakal in the Upper Nile state of South Sudan. He was born and raised in Malakal and attended primary and secondary schooling there. After earning his Sudan national school certificate, he began his spiritual studies in Khartoum, Sudan, earning a Diploma in Philosophy from St. Paul’s Major Seminary in 2000.
In 2004, he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Sacred Theology, becoming ordained as a deacon that year in Malakal. He served as Assistant Parish Priest of Christ the King Parish and as Parish Priest from 2009-2013. Bishop Nyodho further served in the capacities of Director of Pastoral, Liturgical Catechetical Center, Director of St. Joseph’s Diocesan Technical Workshop, and as a member of the Diocesan Pastoral Council.
Following his studies in Rome, he was appointed Vicar General in 2019, and continued on to earn a Masters and Doctorate in Moral Theology. He studied Italian, French, and German, and is fluent in Shilluk, Dinka, Arabic, English, and Italian.
In 2019, Bishop Stephen published a book entitled, The Role of the Catholic Church in Peacebuilding and Human Rights Promotion in South Sudan. He was appointed Bishop of the Catholic Diocese in Malakal by Pope Francis in May of 2019, and was installed in the office in July of the same year.
Bishop Stephen has been outspoken in his call for the cessation of violence in South Sudan, and an advocate for the people of Malakal during their crises from violence as well as natural disasters, including the massive flooding in recent years. He is an active partner in coordinating Sudan Relief Fund’s many projects in the region.
