Father Matthew Remijio Adam Gbitiku

Bishop – Catholic Diocese of Wau

Fr. Matthew Remijio is a Sudan Relief Fund partner and Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Wau in the western region of South Sudan. He was born and raised in Wau and attended secondary school in Khartoum, Sudan, joining the Comboni Missionaries in 1994. He earned a Diploma in Philosophy from St. Paul’s Major Seminary of Khartoum in 1997, continuing his priestly studies in Uganda (Novitiate in Kampala) and Sacred Theology in Lima, Peru, where he graduated magna cum laude and received his Diaconate Ordination in 2003.

Returning to Wau, Father Remijio received his priestly ordination in 2004, and went on to study in Rome where he graduated magna cum laude again, earning his License in Spiritual Theology from 2008 to 2010. He then became a student at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa, Second Cycle Institute of Canon Law, until his appointment as Bishop.

Father Remijio’s travels have taken him across parts of Africa, South America, Europe and the Middle East, speaking eight languages. In his priestly ministry, he has held various positions of service from Khartoum to Wau, including parish priest, chaplain of the region, director, spiritual director, and vicar general. He was elected Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Wau by Pope Francis in December of 2020, and consecrated as Bishop of Wau in January, 2021.

Bishop Remijio has been instrumental in the Wau diocese to promote a climate of reconciliation and forgiveness, urge congregants to take an active role in evangelization, and in his appeal to secure humanitarian aid during the flooding that devastated vast portions of South Sudan, among many other ministry efforts.

Says Father Remijio, “I am humbled to sincerely express my heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to Sudan Relief Fund. Thank you for the support and close partnership for the common good of the people of Wau, and South Sudan as a whole. God bless Sudan Relief Fund and the donors supporting Sudan Relief Fund.”
